Week In Style: Best Dressed Indian & International Celebrities & Sartorial Icons

Pure Georgette Salwar Kameez

Last we spoke about the dresses that were trending for the season – from casual to flirty to glamorous (read the complete article here). And it seems like our words were kind of proverbial, going by the celebrity style we witnessed this week. From international fashion week after parties and film premieres to the store launches and promotional events closer home, it was the week of the dresses fashion wise and we for one aren’t complaining!

From the modern day princess look of Kangana Ranaut to the femme fatale version by Katy Perry, here are 8 celebrity looks from the week that went by that reiterate the fact that a lady looks her elegant best in a tailored dress, or her casual best in a flowy dress or her prettiest in a ruffled dress…err, somebody stop us before we launch in a full fledged ode to the dress!

Scroll down on the details of each of these looks, more from the category and oh yes, to find where you can shop some of these amazing dresses to own that celeb style!

The Princess Diaries Look

If anyone can pull off the charming princess look, it has to be Alia Bhatt. Pictured here in a custom made dress by stylist extraordinaire Ami Patel (how cute and cool is the dress?!), she looked ever the fun, youthful and cute as a button part to the T.

The Femme Fatale Look

We have seen her do bizarre and we have seen her do candy princess but there is no denying that whenever Katy Perry makes a public appearance, there is much envied speculation about how fearlessly she owns the look. And there is no denying that her look at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party this week was sultry sensuousness at it’s best. Icon worthy? Most definitely yes!

Closer home, Sushmita Sen has to be the original femme fatale for us – the endearing sass (oxymoron as that may be) and the innate style sense leaves us in awe every time she is out and about. As was the case for a recent promotional event in Dhaka. Oh and did we mention, you can shop this look right here (the fact that it is right off the runway from last month’s India Bridal Fashion Week is just the added incentive, if you even needed one)!

The Eclectic Traditionalist Look

There can be no better brand ambassador for Dior then Ms. Kalyani Saha, at least in our opinion. The way she manages to pull of such diverse looks with the classic design label pieces earns her all the sartorial brownie points from us. Like the way she wore this Dior sequinned top with a simple black sari for that modernistic ethnic look – wish we were that effortlessly fashion forward!

Speaking of contemporary ethnic ensembles, we recently came across Cecile D’Ascoli at Patine’s new collection preview, looking ever so charming in her Patine Dress in handwoven linen (the collection was a celebration of the handloom revival in Indian fashion – read tomorrow’s blog for more on this) with exquisite, understated zari thread work. One of this for us, please! (Do pardon the slightly out of focus, highly exposed picture – it was just our regular old iPhone at work)

The Easy Breezy Day Look

Well she can wear whatever she wants and still look absolutely ravishing. Deepika Padukone, in our opinion, is quite possibly the most sartorial-genic person (a term we have coined for someone who looks good in everything) around. Take for instance, the below look. While on anyone else, it would be a regular old dress, pretty yes but not worth righting home about. But Ms. Padukone manages to look ever so fresh and delectably charming in it and by association, the dress becomes something we want in our closet now (never mind our own levels of sartorial-genicness)!

Another casual look we really liked from last week’s celeb spotting was this sporty chic Carven look by Athiya Shetty for her newly released film promotions. As we mentioned earlier in the week, Ms. Shetty is turning out to be quite the style icon (read about a detailed synopsis of her style here), this recent appearance being another case in point.

How to buy a saree that perfectly fits your body?

Ladies Suit for Sale Online

Looking for that perfect saree?

Most people like me are often confused on what type of saree should they buy so as to make them look really beautiful, slim and feel tall. This is the most common question that every women who loves to present themselves in a saree has got in her mind. There could be lot of factors like which saree to choose based on occasions; how to drape a saree; which type of saree to wear depending on season, etc. but I will be writing more such articles to address those questions in the future. This article will try to address confusions around buying a saree that better suits your physique and personality. There are 4 things that could affect your saree fit
  • Material of the saree
  • Color of the saree
  • The way you drape a saree
  • Design of the saree
For overweight women –

To begin with, choose a light weight material like Georgette, Chiffon, Crepe and Art silk to an extent.  Blended silk sarees with less zari can also be preferred. Try to avoid heavy weighing sarees like pure silk with lot of zari work and sarees with heavy embroidery and stone work or mirror work. In terms of color, choose light colors that are subtle and doesn’t show you gaudy. Wear your saree with closed pleats that are neatly pinned. If you leave the shoulder pleats flowing, it may show you heavier than you actually are. Choose designs that are fine and have smaller patterns rather than elaborate or large prints.

For petit  women –

In most cases, it works if you choose a material that is opposite of what was encouraged for over weighed women for e.g. pure silk with full zari work, cotton and brocade sarees that are heavy. Sarees with elaborate embroidery and stone work can be good choice as well. Heavy and dark colors go well with slim women as it adds richness to the overall appearance. Try to avoid wearing sarees that are pinned up tight. I would suggest to either leave shoulder pleats flowing or pin them loosely so that it doesn’t make you look skinny. Large printed designs usually go well with petit women.

For medium/athletic built women –

The good news for medium built women is that they fall within the range of slim and over-weighed women and therefore have the freedom to choose from both. As explained above, the choice of colors, design, patterns and the amount of work totally depends on your preference and choice. Though, I would caution on selecting the colors of the saree that complements well with your skin color. Generally light color sarees go well with dark skinned women. However a fair skinned women can choose from a wider range.

For short women –

From the perspective of material and color, you can pick and choose from one of the above depending on your body size but where short women needs to focus is on the designs and patterns of the saree. It is advisable to avoid tall patterns like temple or mango designs that takes most part of the saree borders. It is preferable to wear close pleats since it may make you look taller than you actually are; loose pleats may be avoided.

For tall women –

As far as designs and patterns are concerned, try wearing long or elaborate prints and designs which complements well with your height. Material and color can be chosen depending on the body size however it is worth mentioning that chiffon, georgette or striped patterns might show you even taller. Therefore use your best judgement in picking those saree materials. I have personally noticed that checked patterns go well with tall women.

I hope this article has clarified the single question that most of you have in your mind and this is based on the personal observation that I have made for many years being a saree lover. Please use your best discretion in taking these suggestions while you buy a saree and I am sure you would look more pretty and gorgeous in a saree.

Everything you need to know about poly georgette fabric

Do you know enough about the most popular fabric in the fashion industry at present? Do you know where it came from, what’s the best use of it and how to take care of it? What do you know about poly georgette fabric?
Worry no more! This post is your guide to everything you need to know about the very popular poly georgette fabric.

What is Georgette?

With an overall bouncy look, georgette is a light-weight, sheer fabric which was traditionally made from silk but now uses polyesters as well. Georgette is very easy to dye due to its strong absorbent quality and has a dull, rough texture. The fabric is now widely used around the globe especially in women wear. It is especially popular with Indian wear because of its fine bouncy look.

The threads that are used to make the georgette fabric are highly twisted which cause them to crinkle as they are relaxed. Although the weave of georgette is tight, but the overall appearance of the fabric is sheer because of the thinness of the threads. Also, because of thin fabric, it gets lightweight and works perfect with layering.
Unlike a few fine silks, georgette is a strong fabric which makes them easy to wear. When it comes to weaving the fabric, it is in two forms: pure georgette and faux georgette. The pure georgette is woven out of silk yarns while faux georgette is woven from either rayon or polyester.

Origin & History

The poly georgette fabric has its roots in French History. In the 20th century, Madame Georgette de la Plante introduce this tender. It was widely used in 1915. It is believe that the main source of inspiration behind this fabric is chiffon and that might be the reason why poly georgette is quite similar to chiffon fabric. However, there are certain differences as well.

Difference between georgette and chiffon

Here are the differences between these two fabrics:
  • Georgette is less lustrous than chiffon. Georgette fabric is a bit dull.
  • Georgette is more opaque than chiffon.
  • Chiffon has a softer finish as compared to georgette.
  • Georgette is springier.
  • Chiffon is even lighter than georgette.
  • Smaller yarns with high twists make up chiffon whereas georgette has slightly larger yarns.
  • Georgette is more durable than chiffon.

Types of georgette

Apart from the usual pure and faux georgette, here are various types of georgette:
  • Poly ester georgette
  • Silk georgette
  • Nylon georgette
  • Viscose georgette
  • Satin georgette
  • Jacquard georgette

Who should wear poly georgette?

If you’re wondering whether this fabric would be right choice for you or not, here are some tips.
  • Georgette is best for the people of slightly conservative nature who think chiffon is too translucent and would prefer a slightly more opaque material.
  • Georgette is a clingy and flowing fabric and brings out the best features of your body. It looks really good on curvy figure.
  • Due to its bouncy look, georgette looks best with gowns, sarees etc.
  • If you want a fabric that can be easily handled while you wear it and can also be maintained easily, poly georgette is your thing.
  • Check out our post on why you should own a poly georgette saree for more such tips on why you should get this fabric for yourself.

  • Do not dry the fabric in direct sunlight.
  • Do not machine dry the fabric.
  • Some more things you need to know about poly georgette fabric
  • Pure georgette is the most costly form of georgette while other forms of georgette, especially poly georgette, is quite inexpensive.
  • Traditionally georgette was only meant for royal families due to its high price. But with the advance of poly georgette, georgette has now become one of the most common and widely worn fabric in the world.
